The benchmark of Gins

The spirit that derives its predominant flavour from juniper berries, Gin has evolved over the course of a millennium from a herbal medicine invented by the Dutch physician Franciscus Sylvius to become one of the most popular and widely distributed range of spirits. English troops fighting in the Eighty Years War brought it home and simplified the style to become today’s most popular London Dry style. There are various origins, styles and flavour profiles and it forms the base for many world famous classic mixed drinks including the Martini and the Singapore Sling. In tropical British colonies Gin was used to mask the bitter flavour of quinine, the only effective anti-malarial compound, which was dissolved in carbonated water to form tonic water resulting in the popular Gin and Tonic drink.
