Hagi Yaki originated as pottery produced at the Hagi Domain Kiln. A pottery that has a rich history of over 400 years. Now Hagi is an association of ceramic artisans producing beautiful hand made tea ware using traditional techniques. Each Hagi Yaki item goes through a 14 step process, including high temperature firing which changes the colour of the pottery.
These cups are made by ceramic artist Hironobu Ogawa. He uses traditional Hagi techniques with a new approach, by crafting the cups from Hagi red soil and adapting the traditional white glaze to give the cups a bubbling quality. The results are said to be patterns that resemble white lava formations on red soil.
